I. Vocabulary - Adverts
"Adverts" is an informal word to name "advertisements". The definition of "advertisement" is a picture, short film, song, etc. that tries to persuade people to buy a product or service, or a piece of text that tells people about a job, etc.

1. How do you usually find out about local news, events and courses?
2. Do you ever make phone calls about these in English? What is difficult about doing this?
(15 min)
1. Go to book page 14 - Exercise 1 B -Read the adverts - Which ones would interest you the most.
2. Go to book page 128, exe. 1.3.
Read the phrases in charts: “opening phrases” and
“polite enquiries”.
3. Write different opening
phrases (openers) and polite enquiries you could use to get information about the adverts you chose.
4. Observe the words in bold letters. List the seven words/phrases in your notebook. Then match them to the meanings in exercise 1C.
5. Exercise 1D - Which of the words/phrases could be used to talk about:
1. restaurants
2. a cookery course
3. buying a used car
4. a hotel booking
II. Polite Enquiries
Polite enquiries (inquiries) are courteous ways to ask for information.
1. Exercise 2 A - B. Listen to the phone conversation and answer the questions. Then complete the sentences. Listen again to check your answers. (10 min)
2. Exercises 2 C -D. Intonation practice. (3 min)
3. Exercises 3 A - B. Make enquiries more polite by using the words in the brackets, then match the adverts in exercise 1B with the enquiries in 3 A. (5 min)
III. Manage Enquiries
When do we have to manage enquiries?
Exercise 4 A, page 15. Read the phrases 1 to 6 and decide who is speaking, the receptionist (R) or the caller (C). Then (4 B) go to page 164 to check your answers in the audio script. (4 min)
Exercise 4 C.
In which two phrases the caller thinks she's causing a problem?
Which is a polite phrase from the receptionist meaning "please be patient"? (2 min)
Exercise 5.
Pair work. Decide who is going to role play the receptionist and who is going to be the caller.
Then, individually read your part in the flow chart and think of phrases your could use.
Finally, work with your partner to put the conversation together. Role-play the conversation. (10 min)
